Why most people in the U.S. are not socialists

Because America has always been seen (right or wrong) as a land of opportunity. So, opportunity doesn't exist within Socialism. Because it's "From each according to their ability and to each according to their needs". This is the byword of socialism and the reason it doesn't work is that people are at core very selfish beings. Some can be very giving sometimes, but most people are completely selfish. So, in order to have a civilization move forward you have to monetize that selfishness in some way. This is just a problem of human nature.

For example, I can give myself as an example. I was asked to leave my childhood church at age 21 but I was in love with 2 girls in the church each of which I wanted to marry which was also very confusing for me at the time. So, because I lost not only my church but also the 2 girls I wanted to marry I was very very confused by all of this and considered suicide for about 3 years time. During this time I worked some and went to college but I really wasn't motivated to move in really successful directions. Also, I had already studied and become a computer programmer and had done business computer operations at several large companies and eventually hospitals too, I wasn't happy because what I wanted to do in regard to computers I realized I was 50 years or more to early for. So, I was disappointed in a way I cannot really even explain to you here.

But, what happened to me?

At age 25 my live in girlfriend got pregnant and I had to drop out of college to support my new wife and child and this moved me forward dramatically. I realized I wanted to own businesses to support my wife and child and by about age 28 I started my first business as a direct result of getting married and having a child. Without the opportunities here in the U.S. I likely could not have succeeded in the way I did. In a socialist nation I likely might have failed or even killed myself.

So, the opportunities here allowed me to succeed financially by starting to own my own businesses by my late 20s. Having a son was the best thing that could have happened to me because it forced me to grow up and stop being so selfish I wanted to kill myself.

So, only through a capitalist nation with opportunities to start and own my own businesses could I have likely succeeded at all. This is why I'm not a socialist.

People who aren't practical and logical tend to be socialists because they haven't studied the human condition enough through psychology and sociology and anthropology etc.

Socialism cannot work simply because of the way people actually are. They are very self serving, especially in regard to taking care of themselves and their families.

Only when I was faced with a child and a wife to support could I grow up enough to get over myself and to build businesses to support them.

However, there is one aspect of Socialism that I agree with. Medical Care should be a right and not a privilege. Why?

Because if you are 50 to 64 years old here in the U.S. right now, if you are a woman or a man for full health care insurance you are presently paying 1800 a month here in California right now. Even when I was 64 the year before I went on Medicare I paid 1800 to 1900 a month for full health insurance coverage.
This is ridiculous because the majority of people cannot pay that and often sacrifice having health insurance at all so they can put their kids through college. And doing this often causes their untimely deaths or bankruptcies when they have an unplanned catastrophic illness.

So, though there is still opportunity here in the U.S. if you are smart enough you might die from 50 to 64 if you don't buy health insurance at 1800 a month if you have a catastrophic illness. OR you might go bankrupt without paying 1800 a month and lose your home and business because you got sick without health insurance.
