Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Shallow’ makes history for Oscar winners on its way off the charts

After almost a year on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s duet “Shallow” has fallen off as of the chart dated August 24. But it leaves behind a historic legacy: it spent longer on the Hot 100 than any other Oscar winner for Best Original Song.
Overall, “Shallow” clocked 45 weeks on the Hot 100 since its debut last September in advance of the theatrical release of “A Star is Born,” the movie in which the song is featured. That went far beyond the previous record of 33 weeks set by Idina Menzel‘s “Frozen” anthem “Let it Go,” which peaked at number-five. Written by Gaga, Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando and Mark Ronson, “Shallow” reached the top-10 right after the film opened, and stuck around throughout the awards season as it won a Golden Globe, a Critics’ Choice Award, two Grammys and finally an Oscar.
Gaga and Cooper performed the song during the Oscars telecast, which was enough to finally push it to number-one on the Hot 100. That made it the fourth chart-topper in Gaga’s career, following “Just Dance” (2008), “Poker Face” (2008) and “Born This Way” (2011). And not only did it get her an Oscar for Best Original Song, the film earned her a nomination for Best Actress too (Olivia Colman won instead for “The Favourite”). “A Star is Born” was also up for Best Picture (“Green Book” beat it there).
“A Star is Born” was paying dividends on the awards circuit even after the Oscars were over. Lady Gaga won two MTV Movie and TV Awards including Best Performance in a Movie, and she and Cooper are currently up for two MTV Video Music Awards: Song of the Year and Best Collaboration.
