My friend and I were a part of the "Back to the Land movement" of the late 1960s through 1980s here in the California, Oregon and Washington Area. So, even though this movement was nation wide it was easy and still possible to buy land cheap enough and materials are cheap enough to build your own home.
I'm thinking it might be possible still to do this. But, you would have to build far enough off the beaten path now to make property values low enough to do this. The most likely person able to do this would be someone who could work anywhere on earth online. But, it's true this kind of person might not have "Fix-it" or "build-it" skills.
However, if you go to youtube it will show you ways to build almost anything. Just look at the videos already there to get a better idea about it all.
