When I went to High School it seemed like about 50 percent of people graduated high school. The reason for this was people got married a lot younger then in the mid 1960s and at that point more people lived together in college and after than in the 1950s or before. Even though people might live together and lie about being married a lot or a woman might have a baby and say she was divorced when she was never married also in the 1950s a lot too. So, things in some ways were the same but in order to make them work people often moved around more to appear for things to work in the 1950s. Also, I saw girls 14 or 15 years old who weren't happy with their parents live with men from ages 18 to 50 too. So, for girls who weren't wealthy this was often an option too then. So, this was a major reason why people didn't graduate high school as much in the 1950s and early 1960s. However, all of this changed drastically because of the Viet Nam War when if you didn't go to college you might die in that war by being drafted. Going to college you could get a 2S student deferment so this happened a lot then. Things in some ways were the same then but abortion wasn't legal until the 1970s. The birth control pill in 1960 and abortion in the 1970s changed the U.S. a lot along with how people behaved in their lives. There was a lot more honesty after the birth control and abortions were legal. Before this one had to lie a lot in life to survive often. This was especially true for women. For a woman to tell the truth was often fatal in life for them before about the mid 1960s.
