This movie focuses on mostly the relationship between Guinnevere and Lancelot. In this movie Sean Connery is a much older King Arthur and well seasoned and well established after many battles. So, the much younger Lancelot played by Richard Gere has the hots for Guinnevere who he keeps rescuing her even before he becomes one of King Arthur's knights because he has fallen in love with her. So, Lancelot's loyalty is always to his love for Guinnevere not really for King Arthur who can can take or leave. Also, the back story on Lancelot is losing his whole family as a boy to a battle and being alone ever since fending for himself. So, Guinnevere is the first thing that really has made sense to him in his whole life and so he isn't willing to give her up.
