Here would be the logic from Russia:
"They want to collapse or end the present Ukrainian democratic Government, so one way they might think of doing this is to bomb or shell the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine."
Why would this be strategic?
It might be seen by Russia as a way to lose less Russian Troops and force more Ukrainians to either die from radiation poisoning or leave Ukraine.
The downside for Russia: "What if the radiation moves into Russia and starts killing Russians because of prevailing winds because often radiation is carried by both winds and underground or above ground rivers too?" Radiation also could kill Russian soldiers forcibly deployed to Ukraine against their will. This won't play well if it gets into Russian news. But, at the same time Putin controls the news and might keep it out of Russian news also.
Putin really doesn't care if EVERYONE in Ukraine now living there dies. This he isn't concerned about at all. His point of view is that he wants Ukraine as a part of Russia so bad that he is willing to kill everyone in Ukraine to have the lands be a part of Russia once again.
So, nuking or sending a cruise missile or shelling of the largest nuclear power plant in all of Europe could be something Putin might consider doing (or having it done by accident?) like killing Ukrainian prisoners of war with missiles or shelling like recently happened or even blaming Ukrainians for blowing up the nuclear power plant.
