It's possible that when she hit the house she fell forward knocked unconscious on the steering wheel as she moved through the house after passing through the first few walls. Now, the car starts the house on fire. Next, the fire engines arrive and start putting out the fire. It's hard to know when they would be able to rescue Anne Heche who likely was unconscious while gasoline and the house burned around her. By the time they rescued her her clothes were charred embers leaving patterns on her body. This breathing of smoke and gasoline fumes and the fire consuming her car and the house likely damaged her lungs as well as scorched her clothes and body. The pain would be so great that being unconscious in a coma might be a long term blessing and enhance her chances of long term survival.
