Is Tibetan a Sanskrit based Language?

I was very surprised to see that Tibetan was a Sanskrit based language because others had told me it was.

Being quotes:

No, Tibetan is not a Sanskrit-based language; it belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family, while Sanskrit is an Indo-European language. However, there is a significant historical connection: the Tibetan script was developed from a variant of Devanagari (a Sanskrit-derived alphabet), and Sanskrit vocabulary was heavily borrowed into Tibetan, especially for Buddhist texts.
Linguistic Classification
  • Tibetan: A Tibeto-Burman language, unrelated to Sanskrit's linguistic family.
  • Sanskrit: An Indo-European language, from a different part of the world.
Script and Vocabulary
The script used for Tibetan was created based on a variant of Devanagari, which is a script used for Sanskrit and other Indian languages.
Tibetan borrowed a significant amount of vocabulary from Sanskrit, particularly during the import of Buddhism from India to Tibet. This influence is evident in concepts related to Buddhist philosophy, such as karma, dharma, and nirvana.

In summary: While Tibetan and Sanskrit are distinct and unrelated languages, their intertwined history, particularly through the transmission of Buddhism, led to the adoption of a Sanskrit-derived alphabet and extensive Sanskrit vocabulary within the Tibetan language and its literature.
