One PBS Newshour news reporter thought that it was 80% likely that the government was going to shut down

It's true the Democrats want funding for Medicaid and Obamacare so so many people don't keep dying from lack of health care in the U.S.

However, there doesn't seem to be any plan to reopen government at all if the Republicans don't give the Democrats what they want so so many poor and middle Class people aren't dying all over the place like they are now here in the U.S. So, this could really be a problem.

President Clinton and Gingrich shut down the government during the 1990s for  quite a while. But, my wife and I were able to be married in Yosemite National Park because of the shutdown during a time when the Park was open and not closed. So many people cancelled their reservations because of the two shutdowns in Yosemite National Park that we were able to get reservations in between the shutdowns. Otherwise, we would have had to have waited about 2 years to get these reservations to be able to stay there in the hotels and get married at the Chapel there. So, it worked to our advantage in 1995 in order to get married at the Chapel there in Yosemite and to have a Wedding Reception at the Awahnee Hotel there where presidents and famous people have stayed over the years like President Kennedy and his wife and Queen Elizabeth I of England.

However, the shutdowns worked against us on our Honeymoon in Hawaii because when we did a fly and drive (island to island flight with a car rental) to the big Island of Hawaii from Oahu then to see Volcanoes National Park (where lava often comes up through the ground there) it was closed so we couldn't see the park or get closer to the lava that time.

So, the shutdowns allowed us to get married in Yosemite National park but interfered with our honeymoon on the Big Island of Hawaii going into Volcanoes National park there.

The longest shutdown then was from December 16th 1995 until January 6th 1996 which was the longest shutdown of the U.S. government ever historically so far. As a result of this Gingrich left office eventually.

The point is it is likely we all need to prepare for the government to shut down for a week or more (80% chance of this).

Here is more about the Government shutdowns then in the 1990s: begin quotes:

Two government shutdowns occurred under President Bill Clinton and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich in 1995–1996
. The first lasted 5 days, and the second lasted 21 days.
The 1995 shutdowns
  • First shutdown (November 14–20, 1995): The government shut down for five days after Clinton vetoed a spending bill from the Republican-controlled Congress. About 800,000 federal employees were furloughed.
  • Second shutdown (December 16, 1995–January 6, 1996): This shutdown lasted 21 days, making it the longest in U.S. history at the time. It was the result of continued disagreement over budget levels and spending priorities.

Background and resolution
  • Republican demands: After winning control of Congress in 1994, Republicans, led by Gingrich, sought significant spending cuts on programs like Medicare and education to achieve a balanced budget.
  • Clinton's opposition: Clinton opposed the deep spending cuts and rejected the budget proposals, leading to the funding impasses.
  • Resolution: Public opinion polls during the second shutdown largely blamed the Republican-led Congress, strengthening Clinton's position in negotiations. The standoff ended when a deal was reached on a balanced budget agreement with more modest spending changes.
