First of all the Assassin was dating his room mate who is a man who is becoming a woman but on top of all this the Assassin was a MAGA adherent too just a different faction of MAGA than Kirk. So, it's possible that the Assassin was closer to a Hitler Viewpoint and dating a transexual which is pretty strange to make any sense of at all in a MAGA guise. So, Kirk just wasn't as extreme in certain ways as the assassin which is why the Assassin chose to shoot Kirk.
I was talking about all this with my son today and it's all pretty strange leading to the notion that I have found most useful in life:
