When we took off from JFK International Airport in New York City for Europe we were very surprised that we basically each had our own space and not only our own seat but also a seat that turns basically into a bed during the night (especially for night flights like we were on). We boarded our plane around 1 AM because it was late taking off and landed around 2:00 pm in Europe. Usually I can't sleep on a plane but with an actual bed like device I did sleep some and was somewhat functional in Europe when our driver showed up to drive us to our hotel where we slept more soundly until my daughter and her baby and husband showed up later that day. Also, since I'm 77 and my wife is 70 we have to be very careful of our sleep cycles more than if we were 50 or younger. So, we both slept as much as we could to adjust to the time changes.
since europe mostly is 9 hours ahead of West Coast time it means that for example, when you get up at 8 am in Europe it is 11 pm the night before on the west Coast. So, mornings often are the most difficult to get used to because you are getting up at 11 pm west coast time. However, now I have adjusted all my medicines so the times I take them are more useful to me in Europe and I'm not taking any medicines at 2 to 4 AM European time.
So, though travel at age 77 is more difficult than before, so far at least it is manageable and also I am learning about melatonin which can be very helpful with Jet lag.
However, I never took it before and so I had some problems. The first night here I slept until 2 am at which point I took it but it kept working taking it this late into the next day and I wound up also sleeping from 10 am local time to 6 pm local time. So, even though I was rested by taking this at 2 am I wound up losing a whole day here in europe as a result of taking melatonin at 2 am. So, you want to take the melatonin before 10 or 11 am for best results of sleeping in a new time cycle here in Europe.
Then when we return to the west coast again we will again have to adjust to being 9 hours behind Europe time wise too.
