A case study noted that a patient's ankle edema completely disappeared after switching to a gluten-free diet

The title was my experience exactly. I haven't had to take Furosemide or Potassium (that you take with the Furosemide so you don't die) since around Christmas 2025 and it's now February 16th with no swelling in my ankles at all since then until I had 3 brownies for Valentine's day weekend made by my wife. So, no gluten at all until until these brownies. The basis of my diet has been basically Oatmeal and mashed or baked potatoes as long as I didn't eat the peelings because of the fiber. For protein I used Core power shakes that come usually in vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry Banana. This is how I have survived since the hospital. Also, I could eat things like jello too or Greek Yoghurt which is very healthy too. However, the ONLY change yesterday was the gluten in the brownies and I noticed a little swelling in my ankles like before so I'm not having any more brownies or anything else gluten because I don't want to have edema again caused by gluten. So, I have never been a celiac but because I'm 77 it's likely I have gluten sensitivity now.

begin quote:

Gluten: For those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, eating gluten can cause chronic inflammation, which in turn leads to water retention and swelling. A case study noted that a patient's ankle edema completely disappeared after switching to a gluten-free diet.
