They kept him under to get the yeast out of his blood which would otherwise have been fatal. I think they filtered his blood to remove the yeast or something like that then. However, it is more common to keep the person somewhat conscious but highly sedated so they don't care that much that they are intubated or can't eat or drink water and have to be fed through an IV in their arm or arms or wherever the IV is put into them that is useful to their survival long term.
HOwever, you might be interested to know that after being intubated unconscious like that in an induced coma for 1 or 2 weeks that he came out of it and they made him forget the whole thing with drugs like Versed and then he lived for another 10 years or so after this experience. So, he went through all of this at around 80 years old and then lived until 90 and seemed pretty normal until he died at 90. What a medical Miracle that was at the time!
So, this was pretty amazing to me to find out that for the last 20 years or so they find it more useful to sedate people and keep them somewhat awake while doing this. However, it is also likely that at some point they are given Versed which takes away the edge partially or completely by distancing someone from what they are experiencing or they can make people completely forget what happened to them also depending upon the situation.
For example, when I got a form of diverticulitis on January 4th this year and believed I might die the emergency room lady doctor gave me enough versed to stay conscious but what it did was to make me feel like I was watching this on TV or to someone else rather than myself.
She did this so I didn't die or go into severe shock from throwing up black water from my intestines as they tried to save my life which obviously they did. However, it was pretty weird having her wipe off the stuff off of my chin which otherwise would have been somewhat embarrassing and I could see how many people just would have died going through all this at my age 78 that were not helped in some way to cope with all this at this age.
So, I can see why people are living longer than they used to because they don't just have to die at home or in the emergency room of hospitals around the world from the shock of impossible things happening to them.
So, from my point of view this is definitely a medical miracle happening around the world that all this is happening so more people are living to 100 years old or more now every day worldwide.
