The ocean is still turbulent from the Earthquake yesterday

However, if you are barefoot don't step directly on the Man o War things that I always thought were jellyfish but are something else. There are also small "Ladyfingers" washed up on beaches too today. Since they are living things sometimes still I try not to walk barefoot on them either.

I always thought they were Jellyfish but it says below that they are something else I never have heard of before:

Portuguese man o' war we saw on the shore of Grayton Beach ...
The "man o' war" you're likely referring to, which are actually siphonophores, are sometimes washed up on California beaches, and they are not jellyfish, but colonial organisms that can deliver a painful sting.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • What they are:
The "man o' war" is a common name for the Portuguese man o' war, a siphonophore, not a jellyfish.

  • Appearance:
They are often mistaken for jellyfish due to their similar appearance, but they are actually a colony of specialized organisms working together.

  • Stings:
They have tentacles that can deliver a painful sting, even after they are washed ashore.

  • Safety:
If you see one on the beach, do not touch it, even if it appears dead, as it can still sting.

  • Other creatures:
Be aware that other sea creatures, such as "by-the-wind sailors" (Velella velella), which are also blue and resemble jellyfish, can also wash up on California beaches, but they are not as dangerous as the Portuguese man o' war.

  • First Aid:
If stung, rinse the area with vinegar or warm water, and consider using meat tenderizer.

  • When to seek medical attention:
If you have trouble breathing or experience severe symptoms, call 911.
