I remember when Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke (1978) FIRST CAME OUT. It likely was the funniest movie made that year bar none. Some people were offended by the Coastal California Drug Culture but it still was likely the funniest movie made that year. It's true their humor was just too gross for some people though. But, it reminded me so much of what life was like in College in the late 1960s and early 1970s. So, it was a sort of college Time Capsule for many Californians especially. But, it resonated all over the world and became one of the biggest moneymakers of it's kind worldwide and set the tone for many other movies afterwards. They still influence comedy even today.
The only crazier comedian of that era that was irreplaceable was Richard Pryor who had to be the most painfully honest comedian of all time. But if you wanted to laugh there was almost no one better than Cheech and Chong and Richard Pryor in that era of time.
