To not realize this is to go through life always a victim. To realize this and be able to deal with it can make you "Captain of your own ship and master of your own destiny". Most people are somewhere in between places somewhere.
It is not easy to realize that mankind are domesticated animals at core. This is a hard truth for many to face like it was for me when I was young.
Because I have always been a precognitive intuitive when I went to college at age 18 and took a course in Sociology because it was a required course for graduation I realized then that most people in that class believed in Darwin's Theory of Evolution. At the time I guess I had been raised a Creationist and this realization intuitively was so upsetting I had to drop out of college within the first few months because of this dichotomy or paradox that I couldn't resolve at the time.
In a way I was like the tribe with the pole that they worshipped in South America and I was lost in this realization of being different than most people then in my beliefs. It is strange to me now what sets people off in different ways along the way.
However, within 3 years I had resolved this problem within myself. How did I do this?
I realized that Creationism was a Theory and that Darwinism is a Theory and they both were theories and neither had been absolutely proved.
So, I realized I really didn't need to believe either of these theories because in the end they were ONLY Theories. They were just ideas different people believed in and I didn't have to believe in either of them.
Eventually, while studying Anthropology and psychology and philosophy I realized that all human beings were domesticated animals at core. And I realized one could never really be free without understanding this. Because if you don't understand this you become a prisoner your whole life of culture. And the most powerful element of culture is the religions and philosophies that culture springs from.
So, in order to free yourself and become an independent human being and "Captain of your own ship and master of your own destiny" one must understand that we are all domesticated animals at core.
And religion is a way of creating culture so we don't all just kill each other in dogfights. Religion was created to organize families of humans into groups for better group and city and national survival. But, religions are not about truth they are about faith. But, to be healthy psychologically and to have some hope in your life you also need to know that we all came from animals who were domesticated by religions and the cultures that came from those tribal religions.

If you don't realize we are all domesticated animals who created religions to organize ourselves, then you always are a victim to all this and never can be fully empowered as a human being here on earth and beyond out into the Cosmos.
It's true religion has a place in that it humanizes us and organizes us. But, once you realize we are all animals at core who have been domesticated you begin to see where neuroses came from. It is the dichotomy between the fact that we are animals and trying to impose on animals religion and culture. For some, it works and for others it kills.

Understanding all this changes ones view of everything and can lead to complete enlightenment!
