People might laugh at this because they don't see food as a drug or like alcohol but it can be like a drug to people. Let me explain. One of the many different scenarios might be something like this. Let's say as a young person this man or woman was beautiful or handsome. And so, since this person wasn't married yet or raising kids they capitalized upon being young, beautiful or handsome. And when they fell in love with someone and it didn't work out they became despondent and possibly suicidal. So then in order to stay alive they found a new person to date, and when that didn't work out they found another and another and another. Eventually, years later, they found just the right person to settle down with so they did. But what has happened during all the ensuing years? They had become a love addict in order to try to stay alive when they fell in love and it didn't work out they had become suicidal. So, being a love addict was their way to stay alive. But, now they were getting married and all the dynamics were changing in their lives. Soon, they were to be a parent. Now, as cold chills settled in they realized that they couldn't be a love addict without losing custody of their child or children and stay married. So, what are they going to do? They are going to stuff their love addict feelings that came from trying to survive being suicidal and they are going to find another outlet? And what is available that isn't drugs or alcohol? Food, is probably seemingly the safest addiction. What is the problem with this? As this person ages, he or she feels bad about themselves as they gain weight instead of acting out as love addicts tend to do with others. However, with food addiction one can at least have the self respect that being faithful to their husband or wife brings. However, now you have just moved one problem into another. Now, the overweight person who is a food addict has to start thinking about losing weight. But if that person is over 40 or 50 none of the old ways of losing weight work anymore. Running 20 miles or hiking 20 miles usually doesn't work because the weight you are carrying likely will damage your feet or legs. However, not eating food doesn't work because now your body holds onto weight even if you stop eating because of your age. So, what does one do? Some people go to weight watchers but that doesn't work for everyone. Others go to nutritionists who design special diets. For example, a protein drink in the morning of milk and whey protein. Or if you are allergic to Whey then Soy Protein and milk or you might add orange juice in for flavor or other fruit. Then 1 piece of toast with peanut butter on it. That's breakfast until lunch. In this way you have protein which reduces your apostat so you don't get so hungry and you can reduce your general food intake while keeping your protein quotient high. In this way with exercise you can begin to trick your body to lose weight by eating a little something every 2 or 3 hours. If you wait 4 hours to eat your apostat will kick in and you will tend to snack and gorge again. So, in this way there is a way to trick your body into losing weight by eating enough protein first thing in the morning and eating small snacks about every 2 hours during the day. Then at 6 pm you don't eat anything after that until morning but water. So, these are some of the tricks used to lose weight after 40 or 50 years of age.
Also, life isn't very regimental for most people. So, this is generally what you have to keep doing for a year or more. And hopefully, you can lose 2 pounds or more every week or month until you reach your goal. So, this isn't a crash diet which can kill some people over 50. This is a sensible long term discipline which can keep you healthy and alive while maintaining your weight or helping you to lose weight depending about how long termed disciplined you can be in a healthy way.
