However, there was a reason for this which is Japan wouldn't surrender to the U.S. because of their traditions. So, there was no way without losing another 1 million American soldiers to make them surrender. So, Truman "bit the bullet" after firebombing many Japanese cities and they still didn't surrender by nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Was he right in Nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki? It's really hard to say. Did he save 1 million American soldiers lives. Quite Likely. Was it a horrific choice either way? YES! But Americans mostly could not really understand or cope with a decision like this. But, Truman was forced to make this decision. Could you have done what he did?
Hard decisions will have to be made by Mayors, Governors and the federal government these next few years as well and many lives will be in the balance at each and every stage of this. Millions of lives will depend upon what Federal State and local officials do now and in the next 2 years.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
