The South African doctor who first alerted authorities to the presence of the COVID-19 omicron variant reported that it presents "unusual but mild" symptoms.
Dr. Angelique Coetzee, a board member of the South African Medical Association, first noticed otherwise healthy patients demonstrating unusual symptoms on November 18th.

So, it is hard to know at this point whether this is a long term Covid problem or something more akin to a Flu or Bad Cold and maybe not fatal?
It is unknown at this point because the virus hasn't been studied enough worldwide yet.
However, one of the troubling aspects of this variant is that it seems to attack young people first. This is how South Africa started to become afraid of it because it's spread was and is exponential.
