It's a lot like playing a musical instrument or singing or something like that. You get better by doing it. I have noticed for example, that musicians that were okay in their 20s become truly great often in their 30s through their 80s if they live that long.
However, writing is like this too where you have to do it to increase your skills and to maintain your skills into old age just like anything else.
I find it helps me be more succinct in conversations with people in my life. I find it helps me communicate better and more efficiently in all situations. Writing is a skill but I find the main skill is becoming a word smith where you learn how to choose the right words for any given situation you might be writing about.
Clarity in communication is paramount often to a good relationship so the relationship doesn't end by accident because of something stupid you say to your significant other.
Also, I have found peer counseling saves many marriages too along the way.
You have to learn not to project your childhood and life traumas upon your partner or else they will go away.
You have to be able to say to yourself: "OH! this is my bullshit from my life before my wife or lover. I don't need to project all this on her because she doesn't have anything to do with the traumas I'm dealing with from childhood or young adulthood or whatever."
Being able to be aware of these kinds of things often is the difference between keeping someone good in your life or losing them.
In some ways good communication is everything to keeping a relationship long term if it is meant to last in the first place.
