I found that standing back and leaving them alone generally they will leave you alone too. This was my experience with them in Dharamshala, India. So, I never saw them attack humans like I have seen the smaller brown monkeys attack humans and bite them.
However, the smaller brown monkeys are often okay if they are alone and alone they might make great pets but not the Grey Langurs who are individually at least more scary than the smaller brown monkeys.
So, the scariest monkeys for humans are the smaller brown ones that will attack humans for their food that they might be eating at the time. So, it's really important not to eat in front of the smaller brown monkeys in India because you might be endangering yourself if there are 10 or more of them in a family. Because if you defend yourself you might be attacked and bitten by all of them at once as a family in the same way people are often attacked by raccoons in a larger group too in the U.S., especially smaller women at night with something like a poodle on a leash. The Raccoons will attack the poodle to eat it and then the lady usually winds up in the hospital when they attack the poodle on a leash at night walking her dog.
So, in this sense raccoons are sort of like Monkeys in India. You have to be very careful around them not to be eating things or they are going to want some and since they are very wild this can be a problem if you aren't very careful around the smaller brown monkeys all over India.
For example, when I was in India the smaller brown monkeys would be in Hindu Temples and they had guard with 6 foot long bamboo poles hitting the brown monkeys before they could bite the people visiting the temple. Mostly the monkeys just want food so when people leave food. offerings to the Gods at Temples the monkeys try to get this food and eat it. However, the problem is that they see humans as the source of these food offerings and try to get to humans to give them more food especially in the Temples. So, you have to be aware of this sort of thing because monkeys and Brahma bulls and Cows run loose all over India.
I myself was almost gored by the horns of a Brahma Bull walking through an alley in New Delhi, India. The bull didn't like me walking as close to him as I was and tried to gore me with his horns. Luckily I was 37 and had fast reflexes and grabbed the horn as he stabbed me in the belly with his horn so he just threw me against a wall instead of goring me.
So, Brahma bulls and cows and small brown monkeys you have to watch out for while in India if you are traveling there otherwise you could be injured.
