Even when I was coming up in life I saw the best way to get an education was to start at a community college and transfer over to a 4 year college in my Junior year. Even in the 1960s this was a much better deal economically and you weren't saddled with so many debts because many community colleges are either free or close to it like San Francisco City College (at least for residents of San Francisco).
One actually usually gets a better education this way because going in as a freshman into a 4 year college often your classes are composed of 500 students with a professor and then TA's so often you never even meet your professor in person.
Whereas in a community college you can usually speak with your professor and ask questions and actually get answers to your questions immediately.
begin quote:
In a dramatic shift, Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost
The
poll shows two-thirds of registered voters down on the value
proposition of a degree. A majority said degrees were worth the cost a
dozen years ago.
