Ukraine
and European nations are developing AI technologies for use in the
conflict with Russia, including AI-powered drone defense systems, facial
recognition for identifying soldiers, and systems for analyzing data to
counter misinformation and identify war crimes
. Examples include
Ukraine's use of facial recognition to identify Russian soldiers and
locate missing children, Germany's development of autonomous underwater
vehicles for submarine monitoring, and companies like Stark developing
autonomous loitering munitions. These developments span from defensive
measures like the "Blaze" interceptor drone to more autonomous systems
like the Sky Sentinel turret, and extend to information warfare, such as
using AI to verify facts and identify war crimes. Defensive AI technologies
- Counter-drone systems:
- Sky Sentinel: A German-developed system that uses a turret with a .50 caliber machine gun. It uses AI to detect, lock onto, track, and fire at drones with pinpoint accuracy, essentially making the bullets "guided projectiles".
- Blaze: A European-developed interceptor drone that uses AI to recognize hostile targets and can be used to alert a human operator to a threat. The operator can then use a button to detonate a warhead on the interceptor to bring down the target.
- Underwater monitoring: Germany has developed the "Gray Shock," an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that uses AI to monitor submarine activity and protect undersea infrastructure like pipelines and cables for months at a time.
- Electronic warfare: AI tools are being used to analyze and disrupt unencrypted Russian radio communications, which helps protect Ukrainian forces from surveillance.
- Cyber warfare: AI is enhancing threat intelligence and enabling the rapid distribution of protective software to defend against cyberattacks.
Offensive and intelligence-gathering AI
- Autonomous weapons: Stark, a German company, has supplied Ukraine with its autonomous loitering munition, "Vertus," and is developing other autonomous systems like the Vanta unmanned surface vessel for maritime surveillance.
- Data analysis: AI-powered systems are used for geospatial intelligence, such as analyzing satellite imagery and social media to geolocate Russian soldiers and their equipment.
- Facial recognition: Ukraine has used AI-powered facial recognition to identify Russian soldiers on the battlefield, locate missing children, and help identify individuals involved in child abductions.
Information and legal warfare
- Combating misinformation: AI tools are used to verify facts, authenticate visual evidence from social media, and counter Russian disinformation campaigns.
- Documenting war crimes: AI is used to identify individuals suspected of war crimes and to aid in the identification of deceased soldiers and victims to notify families.
Collaboration and future development
- International cooperation: Ukraine is sharing its defense technology know-how with allies, leading to collaborations on joint projects. For example, the UK is launching the mass production of interceptor drones developed in partnership with Ukraine, and Romania is planning its own drone production.
- Autonomous systems development: Ukraine is close to finishing the development of a system to help distinguish between soldiers and those attempting to surrender.
