So, they lived in what Americans might call "A Magical Thinking State of mind". However, you might meet Christians in the remote places in the U.S. that also might be living in what many would call a "Magical thinking state too". But, when people have never been to school even one day in their lives it is like 1000 years ago in some ways being around them. All the people not strong enough to survive a world like they live in died 1000 years ago or more. So, not being educated was true of many many generations of people who had learned to cope with this too.
Even the Tibetan Lama we brought back to the U.S. after traveling in India and Nepal though he was very educated for a Gelukpa Tibetan Buddhist came from people in Tibet who lived (because of the harsh altitude in Tibet (his parents) past away by 52 to 58 years old and this was pretty normal in Kham Province in Tibet then.
So, most of the world is not at all like the U.S. or Europe or the technological world we all live in and many or even most people never go to first grade (at least this was true still in 1985 and 1986 in India and Nepal. Not sure how it's changed since then because I was raising kids and getting them through high school and college instead of traveling the world a lot then except for this 4 to 5 month trip to India, Nepal, Thailand and Japan.
So, until you meet people who speak English who have never been to school a day in their lives you might not fully understand what I'm talking about here.
Imagine for the last 1000 years none of your relatives or ancestors ever went to school a day in their lives but still found a way to survive anyway.
This is one of the most remarkable things I have ever experienced in my life on many different levels and changed how I saw people in general worldwide ever since.
