This environmentally-friendly toilet will create power from your poo

Backed by Bill Gates, the Nano Membrane Toilet is a remarkable invention aiming to create power and purify water

Bog standard: The toilet that creates water from your waste
Bill Gates famously drank a glass of purified poo .
The Microsoft founder and philanthropist-extraordinaire was making the point that clean sanitation is a huge problem in many parts of the world.
It was the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that issued the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge and invested in a team of British scientists from Cranfield University .
The team responded with the Nano Membrane Toilet.
The ingenuous waterless toilet produces energy by using rotation to pass human waste through a special membrane that separates water molecules from the rest of the waste.

That water then passes into another chamber that contains hydrophilic beads that condenses the water before collecting it.
Another system incinerates the rest of the solid waste, converting it into energy.

Billions of people around the world don't have access to clean sanitation
Although this last part still needs to be worked out, the scientists are hoping the energy used from incinerating the waste can power the filtration process that creates the water.
The leftover energy can be used to power small devices like mobile phones.

The Nano Membrane Toilet has been developed to be affordable and plans are going ahead to test it in Ghana later this year.
If successful, it could be the first step towards helping the 2.3 billion people in the world that don't have access to safe and sanitised toilet facilities.
