Iran and Russia desperately need to raise the price of oil to survive well as nations. This is the foundation of why war may break out now with Saudi Arabia. The only way to change the price of oil for Iran and Russia might be to prevent Saudi Arabia from shipping oil. So, the execution of Nimr might have been what Iran and Russia needed as an excuse to shut down Saudi Oil from Shipping by fostering a blockade on Saudi oil tankers at various locations.
With the last Saudi King having died in the last year or so and the new one still learning the ropes so to speak this might be what Iran and Russia decide to do.
Could they get away with this?
Maybe.
The reason they might get away with this is that many developed countries are oil producing nations. So, those oil corporations and drillers and shale oil miners might produce enough clout on their governments to allow Iran and Russia to actually get away with this. However, if this happens the short and long term consequences might look more like world war II with millions starving to death around the world from extreme spiking oil prices if this actually happens.
Remember, farm tractors need fuel and hauling food to market takes fuel too except where food is consumed near farms operated by hand without mechanized equipment or with horse drawn equipment and horse drawn plows.
