Here is the problem as I see it.
The U.S. spent trillions of dollars to create a majority rule government in Iraq. The problem with this was that a majority rule government in Iraq was going to be Shia not Sunni like Saddam Hussein was.
But, on top of this then the Shia Government of Maliki alienated the 20% or more Sunni minority in Iraq that had been governing Iraq ever since Saddam had been in power "serving in this capacity (as president) from 16 July 1979 until 9 April 2003. Wikipedia.
So, Saddam Hussein (and the Bathist party composed of only Sunnis) had run Iraq's government since 1979.
The U.S. preferred a Majority rule government but they hadn't ruled in Iraq for some time. So, when Maliki became president he basically shut out all the Sunnis or put them in jail or tried to kill them to keep them out of the government. Also, he aligned with Iran and Assad in Syria because they are Shia Governments too.
However, the majority of people in Syria are Sunni so the U.S. supports Assad leaving the government there and the Sunnis ruling. All Sunni governments like Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt etc. agree with this that Assad must leave. However, Russia, Iran and Iraq want Assad to stay.
In order not to create a nuclear war the U.S. because of "Sphere of Influence" has stepped back from an all out war over Syria.
But, now after trillions of dollars into creating a majority government in Iraq ISIL (ISIS) has taken over at least 1/2 of Iraq with fighters more extreme and sadistic than Al Qaeda so Al Qaeda has rejected ISIS(ISIL) and disavowed them from Al Qaeda.
But, money from rich Sunni individuals throughout the Sunni middle east have funded ISIS to take revenge on all Shias in Syria, Iraq, and Iran and Lebanon. So, ISIS is now an instrument of genocide of Shias in Syria and Iraq and anywhere they go. Some Sunnis like this and some don't. The people that don't like this is Saudi Arabia that sent 30,000 troops to the border with Iraq so they don't come into Saudi Arabia and cause havoc there too.
Now, coming into the middle of all this is Russia, Iran and the U.S. into Baghdad to protect Maliki's government. So, to some degree to stop ISIS(ISIL) the U.S. is in a very strange position of having to align temporarily with Russia, Iran, Iraq and indirectly Syria because Syria is also bombing and strafing inside Iraq ISIS(ISIL) positions too.
So, like I said this looks like some kind of world war similar to World War II in the making because we are aligning with Russia against ISIS like we aligned with Stalin and the Soviet Union against Hitler.
