I can tell you my own nightmare stories about this cactus and either stepping on one of these that died and fell off the bush or running by one too close on a motorcycle. These things are barbed like porcupine quills, then they go into your flesh and break off in there and stay for years at a time. So, often if you get them into you they are there for life or until they dissolve in your elbow, knee, hand or leg (or wherever you got them on you). One of the easiest ways is wearing thongs or beachwalkers with the foam sole. They go right through this if you walk over a bunch or group of these that often fall off dead off of the bushes. So, if you see one of these walk around it and give it at least 5 feet in berth because dead sections often fall off and you don't want to step on them with sandals or walk too close to them with shorts on.
Luckily, any I had in my knee, leg, arm or elsewhere as a young man of 12 to 30 mostly have dissolved years ago now wherever they went in. but, just remember they are like little porcupine quills that go in an then break off so you cannot get them out of your flesh usually because they go too deep. So, they are barbed to keep going in. Sometimes dogs get into them by accident too on their faces or hind quarters. If this happens either put two shoe soles together to remove the bunch of quills or get some thick gloves or two pieces of wood to pull them out. don't try to touch the quills with your hands or you are likely going to have about 20 of them or more in the tips of your fingers or hands just trying to get them off some other part of you.

This is the most difficult cactus to deal with if you get stuck by it
These grow in the Southern California Mohave Desert and in Arizona, Nevada and Mexico and possibly other places as well. They usually aren't fatal but avoid getting near these things, they aren't funny at all if you get stuck.
