If you think carefully about what both Jesus and Buddha did to obtain enlightenment, they each, first Buddha (over 2500 years ago now) sat under the Bodhi Tree continuously without food except for maybe holding a grain or two of rice in his mouth for 1 month or 2 months or however long it was except for water from the river near to him fasted continuously until he obtained enlightenment.
It was somewhat the same for Jesus who speaks of 40 days and 40 nights without food and just water while he confronted his demons just like Buddha also did.
What were they trying to accomplish?
They were both trying to understand their basic nature and by understanding their basic nature they knew they would understand the basic nature of all beings (which is enlightenment).
Very few people today are willing to go through this sacrifice for their own enlightenment and the enlightenment of all beings.
But, it is a part of understanding nature (yours and all beings living on earth and possibly beyond).
We are much more than we appear to be on any given day. When we go to the wilderness and fast we begin to understand this.
The longest I have fasted without food is 7 days and even then I used lemon juice and Maple syrup to cut the toxins as I drank only water so I didn't have a headache from the whole thing. And I was under 25 years of age when I did this.
The longest I have gone without both food or water both was 4 days (96 hours). But still, I understand what Jesus and Buddha were doing in coming to understand both who they were and who we are. I was about 35 years old when I did this.
Jesus and Buddha made this sacrifice for all of us to obtain their basic essence.
In this sense they were both scientists trying to understand (Basic Nature) both theirs and ours. And in this they both were successful.
This is one of the reasons why civilizations on earth are as successful as they are because of both their sacrifices of first finding truth and then sharing it with all of us.
By God's Grace
Note: And if you notice both of them fasted in the wilderness all alone and not around a whole lot of people. There is a reason for doing it this way too. Because until you completely understand your own nature you really cannot completely understand everyone else's nature either. This is just how life really is and has always been.
