I cannot vouch for everyone else in the world but believing in God was always a good thing for me.
However, from my point of view this has absolutely nothing to do with Churches at all. It has to do with your personal connection with God and all life in the whole universe.
When you let anyone come between you and God your days are often numbered as well as your sanity.
So, your personal connection with God brings you the capacity to survive in this world whereas Churches and all that often prevent you from living and might even contribute to your early death.
Some people choose to be atheists but from my point of view that is (in the U.S.) just a rebellion against the Christian Church in general.
So, to me, though I understand it, I see atheism as a way to commit suicide in some ways just like getting too involved in any church is also another way to commit suicide in that you give up your free will and your relationship with God to ministers so they can steal all your money because you are afraid to die. And Atheism I see as a way to die of terror alone in your room because you have lost your connection with life. To me, God is Life and Life is God. And the physical universe is only the mind of God in action. This is my personal experience all the time.
Whereas if you are with God all the time you don't really need a church and you don't really need to be afraid of death because God is always by your side whether you are in this body or after this body passes on.

To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
