The lady rescued was in Makawao Forest Reserve on Maui

Makawao forest reserve is up country at about 2500 feet elevation because Maui because of it's volcanoes goes up to about 10,000 feet altitude. I think what happened is the lady got her directions crossed while in a bamboo forest it looks like. This part of the island is the beginning of the Rain forest side of the island where flash flooding can be a problem and this is how she lost her shoes in a flash flood. What happens is rain comes down and often swiftly flows to the ocean taking people, rocks, sticks and any debris with it when you are in this kind of country. Then she fell into an area at the bottom of a waterfall and couldn't climb out and eventually when they found her the only way out was to rescue her with a helicopter in a bucket on a line. So, she is very very lucky they found her without her shoes after she fell into a waterfall pit that she couldn't climb out from. This kind of place likely would be circular made of lava where water goes inside of. So, the lava often is too sharp to walk on or to climb on without getting your bare feet bloody depending upon the type of lava there. The sharpest lava is called A A lava (or short A Short A) is what it is called each A is when you step on it barefoot you are yelling Ahh Ahh! like when you are being punctured barefoot by sharp lava somewhere on the islands.

I lived on Maui in 1989 and 1990 in Hana and Paia so I know the area where she got lost in. Paia is near to Haiku which is closer to the ocean than Makawao which is up country from Paia and Haiku. Haiku and Paia are closer to sea level and Makawao is about 2500 feet in elevation(at least where the forest reserve is.)

There is also a paved road that goes up to Haleakala Crater which is the biggest volcanic Crater on the island. There are cabins you can hike to across the crater but you usually have to reserve them months ahead unless you can get a cancellation. I think you can still ride down on bicycle tours. I did this with my oldest daughter when she was 16 years old so you ride down something like 30 plus miles and wind up around Paia I believe at the ocean. They take you up there in  window vans towing trailers full of bicycles with special brakes that won't wear out coming down steep hills for miles and miles. But, you want to be doing this in warm enough weather and might not want to do this in a heavy rainstorm either. It can be very cold at the top in the winter time and sometimes there is snow because it's around 10,000 feet there at the summit where you start biking down from. So, even though it might be 70 or 80 degrees Fahrenheit at the beach level it can be freezing or below at 10,000 feet so think about this before you travel down on this biking tour in the winter time when it snows at the summit of Haleakala National Park crater.

Haleakala is also a National Park:
