Extinction was global during this period, eliminating 49–60% of marine genera and nearly 85% of marine species. Only the Permian-Triassic mass extinction exceeds the Late Ordovician mass extinction in biodiversity loss. The extinction event abruptly affected all major taxonomic groups and caused the disappearance of one third of all brachiopod and bryozoan families, as well as numerous groups of conodonts, trilobites, echinoderms, corals, bivalves, and graptolites.

IF you could imagine today losing 85% of ocean or water species that would be quite a loss and I'm not sure whether the human race in it's present form would even survive losing 85% of the water species on earth now.
Think about how many people on earth are tied to the fishing industry and then how many people wouldn't have a job or food to eat where they were on earth if they lived on an island from fishing which might be gone there then.
Here is just one page of 200 listing the genera of Marine fish on earth now.
