If your rear end of your vehicle goes out from under you the best way (if you have enough paved road to do this) is to turn into the slide with your front wheels.
If you are a front wheel drive this could get a little tricky but still under most conditions you should turn into the rear wheels sliding out from under you while removing your foot from the gas pedal. But, mostly once your rear wheels go out from under you you don't want to put your brakes on unless you want to die soon hitting a tree or something because this can put the car into a spin (as in 360 degrees or more).
This is why if you are not used to driving in Snow or ice or slush or black ice it is better not to be especially on freeways when it is like this because other cars or trucks might not know how to properly drive under these conditions either.
Sometimes you can down shift even with automatics or sometimes you can pull up on your hand brake to straighten your car out when the butt goes first down a slope but not always. So, if you start spinning out and survive it it might be better to just stop driving if you don't fully understand the dynamics of snow or ice or slush driving so you don't die.
Downshifting with front wheel drive on a down slope might be a problem so if you are going straight put your hand brake on lightly to straighten out the car while you also release your foot off the gas pedal. Often by downshifting with a front wheel drive and by using your hand brake while pushing the button down so you can release it at any time you can survive some pretty serious situations.
just remember if your car starts sliding sideways or spinning around applying the brakes in any way might be the last thing you ever do.
