I saw this in Kathmandu Nepal where Chagdud Tulku who was a Lama and a Tibetan Buddhist Doctor who moved to Oregon, his dog stayed outside a restaurant in Kathmandu and was fed and petted by passers by and was basically worshiped because he was the holy dog of a Tibetan Lama too. So, I actually met this dog outside of a really good restaurant in Kathmandu. A Cousin of Queen Elizabeth II took me there to meet this dog I had heard about. I had already met Chagdud Tulku in Cottage Grove, Oregon by this point in time in 1986.
These types of HOLY DOGS are sometimes considered by Tibetan Buddhists spirit protectors of humans. It is my personal experience that this is true. Some good dogs in the rest of the world are spirit protectors of humans too.
