I think what has actually happened is that Trump's picks for Cabinet are making Republicans nervous that Trump is destroying not only their party but also the Country as well.
It's obvious from the votes so far that many of them think Trump has completely "Lost it" to de Facto President Musk. Trump lately seems as out of it as Biden did at the Debates.
I think the miles on Trump's life and crazy things he has done has finally caught up to him and he is confused from being almost killed several times now and being convicted of so many things. So, his ONLY real choice was to get elected president even though this likely was the last thing he REALLY wanted to do.
So, because of all this I think Trump has already proved himself USELESS as a PResident even before he takes office. Life and Senility has taken it's toll just like with Biden.
