What I found out is that it stands for "Newfoundland" and "Labrador". Newfoundland appears to be a large Island off the Coast of Labrador. And I think the Labrador breed (of which we had one for several years (a yellow lab male) is one whose group was originally bred in Labrador. I think there are black labs and yellow labs and Brown labs and maybe what is called "White Labs" which is a really light colored one lighter than the Yellow labs.
The one we owned was called Huxley (someone else named him) and when we got him from a yellow lab rescue group his owner had died and he had had a difficult time when his male owner died. So, when Huxley met me he immediately bonded with me and used to sit near the foot of my bed and stare at me all night long. I think he was happy I was still alive. He was a Very interesting water dog with webbed feet for good swimming in ocean or lakes. I think when our last Corgi passed away in 2018 he was bonded with her and then when she died from old age he died a few months later without her.
