Carter state funeral planning will now begin at Biden's direction
The death of former President Jimmy Carter will constitute a rare event in America: a state funeral.
Public observances honoring Carter’s legacy will be held in Atlanta and Washington, DC, followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia, according to the Carter Center.
Final arrangements for his state funeral are still pending, the center said.
The last president to die was George H.W. Bush in 2018. Part of his state funeral was held at the Washington National Cathedral, where 3,000 political leaders and family members congregated to say goodbye to the 41st president.
In attendance was Carter himself, along with Bush’s son, former President George W. Bush and the other living former commanders in chief: Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and then-President Donald Trump.
More on the arrangements: The schedule for Carter’s state funeral will be released by the Joint Task Force - National Capital Region, which has detailed the history and traditions of state funerals. The Joint Task Force says “a state funeral is a 7 to 10 day event and consists of three stages,” which include ceremonies in the former president’s home state, ceremonies in Washington, DC, and ceremonies in the state where the former president would like to be interred — in Carter’s case, in Plains, Georgia.
“To honor a great American, I will be ordering an official state funeral to be held in Washington D.C.,” President Joe Biden said in a statement Sunday after honoring the life of Carter.
After the current president announces a former president’s death, the president then appoints the Defense Department to conduct the funeral, according to the Joint Task Force. The chain of command then ultimately places the commander of Joint Task Force National Capital Region to conduct the ceremonies, which will likely include leaders from across the world.
While the military provides guidelines for state funerals, “typically, family desires determine the number, location and sequence of public ceremonies and observances consistent with military regulations,” according to the Joint Task Force. CNN reported during Bush’s funeral that all presidents oversee plans for their own funeral.
