when I learned about Internet Protocol while studying to become a Network Engineer in the 1990s
Basically what I was taught then was called TCPIP. However, now I have noticed it is often just called simply "Internet Protocol". and sometimes now the TCP is separated from the IP in common usage now. However, remember I was studying Network Engineering in the late 1990s in Silicon Valley.
However, I never became a Network engineer at that time because I got a heart virus and almost died instead for about 9 months from fall of 1998 to may of 1999 and had to retire at that point in life.
However, I thought it might be interesting to explore Internet Protocol today with you so I asked Google AI about Internet Protocol so you can better understand how all the different types of devices are able to access the same Internet worldwide and this is done through Internet Protocol or a better way to say this might be the "Rules or laws of the Internet Worldwide".
Begin quotes from Google AI and some internet links as well:
The Internet Protocol (IP) is the set of rules that govern how data is transmitted across the internet and other networks. It's
the fundamental protocol for identifying and locating devices on a
network, ensuring that data packets travel efficiently and accurately
between them.Essentially, IP establishes the foundation for internetworking and the internet itself.
Key aspects of IP:
Packet-based communication:
IP breaks data into smaller packets, which are then routed across the network.
Connectionless:
IP doesn't establish a continuous connection between devices, making it efficient for various types of data transmission.
Addressing:
IP uses IP addresses to identify devices on a network, allowing for the delivery of data packets to the correct destination.
Routing:
IP handles the routing of data packets through different networks and routers to reach the intended destination.
Foundation of the internet:
IP, along with other protocols like TCP, forms the basis for the modern internet and enables communication between devices worldwide.
Best-effort delivery:
IP does not guarantee delivery or proper sequencing of packets;these aspects are handled by higher-level protocols like TCP.
In
essence, IP is the protocol that enables data to be sent and received
across the internet and other networks by defining how data is formatted
and routed. It's the core mechanism that allows devices to find each other and exchange information.
