Knowing yourself is the essence of Wisdom. Knowing things you can be intelligent but never wise until you know yourself.
It is because until you get to know yourself and make friends with yourself and have compassion for yourself you are in danger of death and all sorts of things as other people manipulate you in ways that could cause your maiming or death for one reason or another.
However, in knowing yourself and making friends with yourself you are on the road then to enlightenment and wisdom and being able to help all those around you to enlightenment and wisdom.
