For me, Enlightenment is encompassing all useful knowledge in the Universe and finding wisdom and then sharing that wisdom with everyone who will listen.
By doing this you not only give wisdom and peace and enlightenment to yourself, you also potentially give wisdom and enlightenment to everyone who listens to you as well.
So, in this sense becoming enlightened is for the purpose of enlightening all beings around you as well, so you become an advocate for the wisdom and enlightenment of all beings in the whole Universe.
For example, Lama Gyaltrul Rinpoche who gave me my first Tibetan Buddhist initiation, when he first came to the ocean I think somewhere around possibly San Francisco? he started to give Dharma Teachings to Starfish in the Ocean which would be logical for an intuitively endowed and enlightened being.
However, our culture thought this might be crazy. So, they took him somewhere to better find out what was going on. Then they found out that this would be a natural part of being a Tibetan Lama in doing something like this because Starfish need to become enlightened too. So, they realized this was just a different cultural viewpoint that would be normal as a fully Enlightened Tibetan Tulku or maybe better said for you here in the western world (a Consciously reincarnating living Buddha) which to me at least is similar to Christ bringing enlightenment to all human beings and all animals and birds and fish potentially as well.
So, to the truly enlightened all beings need to understand what enlightenment is including the starfish and birds and everything else alive in the universe.
Having enlightenment and Wisdom and Peace allows all beings to coexist in a more useful way to all beings as well as maintaining their peace and well being in a more useful way to all beings in the universe.
