There is really no way to usefully protect any ships there. They are literally sitting ducks for Shahed Drones or Scuba divers with magnetic mines to attach to ships. So, Trump is expressing his ignorance of military strategy completely by even asking other nations to join in such a suicidal enterprise.
However, going around Africa or going through the Suez Canal might be feasible. However, the Straight of Hormuz is suicidal and that's all for ships.
Later: At the very least this is true right now. What it will be next week or next year is another story entirely. also, if Ships sink in the main channel there where the neck is the smallest NO big ships are going to make it through there at all.
