Canterrra loop spill 2026. My wife and I went down Canterra loop road in between Dunsmuir and Mt. Shasta but I didn't want to go through the gate to see the spill being cleaned up because I think that is private Railroad land so they gate is there for a reason.
My wife while she was walking our Corgi dog from the hotel met a man from New Mexico Working on this spill so she was interested in knowing where this happened. So, I drove as close as I could without trespassing on railroad land.
This is also where in 1991 Metam Sodium Spilled out of tanker Cars and killed everything in the Sacramento river (plant and animal and fish and insects from that point all the way to where the Sacramento River dumps into Shasta lake above Shasta Dam (this is a very big lake by the way).
So, I used to ride the rapids in the late 1960s and early 1970s with friends from about this point just below Lake Siskiyou Dam to about where Shasta Springs is now so I knew where our old launch point was by going down Canterra loop road to where it turns into a dirt road and on down to where there is a park bench next to the river. Sometimes this area can flood when the snow is melting really fast. The river was high today but not so high as to be dangerous unless you fell in. But, I likely wouldn't ride the river on an inner tube because of the cold water and the dangerously fast river with so much water right now here in March of 2026 because the snow is melting fast right now and making the Sacramento river dangerous likely between Lake Siskiyou Dam and where it enters Shasta Lake and Dam many miles below.
