AI Overview

infinity

/inˈfinədē/

Infinity is a concept that describes something without any limit, bound, or endpoint. It is not a standard number you can count to, but rather an idea used to represent endless quantities or sizes.

Key Meanings and Concepts

Definition: Boundless, endless, or unlimited in time, space, or quantity.
The Symbol (∞): Introduced in 1655 by English mathematician John Wallis.
Not a Number: You cannot perform normal arithmetic with infinity the same way you do with regular numbers without running into undefined results.
Different Sizes of Infinity: Georg Cantor proved through set theory that not all infinities are equal—for instance, the set of real numbers is larger than the set of whole counting numbers
.

Calculus and Limits: Used to describe how a function behaves when it grows larger and larger without stopping.
