Here's an interesting concept right here: What happens when a self driving car is struck with lightning while traveling the speed limit of 65 to 70 mph? Unknown.
More humans in the U.S. die from lightning strikes every year than die from hurricanes or flooding or tornadoes.
So, what does a self driving car do when hit by lightning and all technology is suddenly fried?
Do the brakes lock up and kill everyone on board suddenly?
What will a self driving car do when a tornado or hurricane happens and neither it nor you know this is occurring because you don't live where these things occur because you are from out of the area?
What will a self driving car do in a blizzard if it doesn't know what a blizzard is? Will it just strand you miles from help so you freeze to death? What if you aren't used to blizzard either?
What will a self driving car do when there is an accident ahead and it's sensors don't pick that up in time?
What if an accident is occurring right now ahead of you or next to you? What will the self driving car do? Though a self driving cars reactions might be far superior to a human being (at least under ideal conditions) you might respond to whatever the accident is in a more useful way in which you might survive if you were driving.
A self driving cars reactions (under ideal conditions) might be superior but what if it's program does not cover this particular eventuality because it is an unusual one not a part of it's program? The result. People will die or be maimed. Who is liable for this? You or the car? or the manufacturer?
So, just owning a self driving car could bankrupt you without you doing anything wrong at all.
Does a self driving car notice that the road is flooded or does it drive right into the flood which short circuits all circuitry on board the vehicle and strands you right in the middle of a flowing river?
