I was curious about this myself. So, I asked a retired policeman about this. He was saying that although Police chiefs often have to say politically that police don't support the NRA in actuality this is not true. It really is only politically for public consumption.
The reason for this is especially in the western states, if you call the police or sheriff you might be waiting a minimum of ten minutes to 1/2 h our to an hour for them to show up because of distances. So, if you don't have your own weapons and someone attacks you or burgles your house or rapes your wife or daughter, you better shoot them yourself and know what the laws are in your state regarding what to do next even before you call the police or sheriff, because otherwise you and/or your loved ones are already dead.
The police know this because they see it every single day. It is only the general public that might not have been shot, stabbed, bludgeoned or raped that thinks something else out of a total naivete of these kinds of things in reality. So, because they don't want to find the general public shot, stabbed or mutilated when they get there they tend to support the NRA as individual policemen. However, police chiefs often cannot take this stance and get elected to their offices which are both being commanders but also political.
In other words the average policeman thinks you should be armed at your home so you can protect yourself before they arrive which might be 15 minutes to an hour from now.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
