Well, experts have spoken up and supported Snowden’s claim. They say that it is indeed possible for the NSA to listen to an iPhone’s mic even when the phone is off. Basically, what can happen is this:
“…software could make the phone look like it’s shutting down but actually entering a low-power mode that leaves key communication chips on.”The phone is actually in a ‘playing dead’ state, which would still allow the phone to receive commands. And that includes activating its microphone. This is from Eric McDonald, a hardware engineer in Los Angeles.
The question is, how does the NSA get remote access to your phone in the first place? How does it get your phone to play dead?
They’d have to intercept the unit before it gets to you and implant software or hardware that is necessary for remote access. So, you don’t really know if the phone you have in your hand right now has that implant.
If you’re really concerned, go to an Apple Store and have it checked out.

Yes. The government often insists on this capability from manufacturers and tells them they want to hear what terrorists and criminals say. However, mostly this is just a ruse. Because in the end it isn't the government you need to worry about listening to this stuff. It is the 1% to 5% of employees of any country doing this who then sell it to the highest bidder. Then once anyone has this information they can then sell that to the highest bidder and on and on and on.
This is the reality of what actually happens. The very existence of this information is a death sentence (or the end of careers permanently) for many people on earth and will be as long as this kind of information is taken on everyone on earth through their phones.(whether they are on or off and sometimes whether or not they even have a battery on board the phone or not).
Somewhere between 20 to 100 nations right now are storing everything said on cellphones (on or off) in their countries around the world. And the U.S. is not even the biggest offender.
