In one's 20s one might see all sorts of acts of "Idiot Compassion" by people around leading to their deaths or dismemberment or even murder or suicide. This is what I saw in my 20s too which is why a path of compassion didn't seem very logical to me then.
So, in my 20s I held my "Sword of Truth" in my hand and sometimes this sword cut me and the people around me. As I had more and more adult experiences I came to realize that the "Sword of Truth" killed as often as it saved both "Me" and anyone I met.
So, I began to see it is sort of like this, "He or she who wields the sword of Truth" will automatically kill 50% of the people and save 50% of the people that they wield this "Sword of Truth" on.
At this point I realized this was bad karma to be wielding one's sword in this way and started to search for another path. I also saw people who were "Conservative" in their religions or "Fundamentalist" were really only discriminating and killing others in direct and indirect ways all the time around the world.
Religious wars don't start on the physical battlefield they end there between Muslims and Christians, Muslims and Hindus, and Muslims and Buddhists.
You notice the problem of being Muslim is you likely are trying to destroy or kill all other religions.
However, each religion, whether Christian, Hindu or Buddhist or whatever also has it's own methods of discrimination against all other religions. It's 'Watch what people do not ever what they say!"
Or "Actions speak much louder than words".
People's actions denote their discrimination whether they are in denial or not. And discrimination in regard to this begins the death cycle between religions where people start to die around the world.
So, for example, ISIS is a racist anti-Shia and anti-Christian and any other religion kind of Terrorist group. Their position is genocide of all religions but their own.
Hezbollah is an Anti-Sunni Genocidal Group. Their position is the genocide of all Sunnis in Syria right now. So, Hezbollah and ISIS are genociding each other and all Christians they find too in most cases in the middle east at present wherever they can get away with it. We are seeing Genocidal Religious racism in a form not seen much since Hitler gassed and killed and burned up 6 million Jews during World war II.
We are likely going to see waves and waves of genocidal killings between the sects for years to come. I'm not sure what is going to stop that now. Revenge killings are in full swing already from the genocides the last 3 years so far in Syria and Iraq.
So, what can people do? My thought is that if you are on the killing fields you likely need to go somewhere anywhere else that your family can survive. Otherwise, they won't! (Possibly for years to come)
However, if you grow beyond idiot compassion (the kind that gets you or others killed and learn to move to right mindful compassion (the kind that builds nations, businesses and lives around the world and educates billions of people into acting more responsibly so the whole world isn't nuked out of existence one day). Then you will understand where I came to in my early 30s in understanding what it would actually take to prevent the world from nuking out of existence one day.
And then beyond that if someone nuked the world out of existence, maybe no one need know and we can just pretend it is still here.
There was a plane that crashed in 1977 in San Diego and a friend of mine was picking up a passenger from the San Diego Airport and when this plane crashed he saw all these ghosts walking down the corridors of the airport and didn't know until later that they were the passengers of the plane that had just crashed who expected to disembark in San Diego and so as ghosts they did.
Likewise, if something happened suddenly what is really the difference between a physical world and a heaven realm world? Not much in some ways if you understand or have experienced what I'm talking about.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
