In the beginning of the movie they depict how they tried to kill Jesus at birth but his parents were guided to take him to Egypt and so likely he was the only boy in Jerusalem (or thereabouts) who wasn't killed around his age. So, this is the way they begin this with the three wise men and them trying to kill Jesus at birth with orders from the King of Israel, Herod.

Later on, when John, The Baptist, (his cousin baptizes Jesus) he recommends he go out into the desert to fast and meet God for 30 days like John just did. This is a very shamanic version of both John, the Baptist and Jesus that most people Haven't tuned into during the 20th century. However, Jesus, John the baptist and Buddha were all Shamans in the original meaning of the word and so met God through Fasting and Praying which is how most did it then and also this is done even now throughout most of the world too, by people who really want to get to know God. However, fasting is difficult, especially for 30 days or more just on water which is how it often was done then. It's effects are a a very different perception of reality than what is considered normal where long conversations with God and Nature can actually occur at great length.

Also, the English gentleman Steven Moyer, who played Bill Compton on "true blood" is Pontius Pilate in this movie as well.
