Golden Globe Nominations Show Netflix Is Taking Over
Netflix, which has been getting (and winning) Golden Globes since 2013 thanks to House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black, actually beat out all other networks this year with eight nominations—one ahead of HBO. And in the Best Series, Musical or Comedy category an astounding four out of the six nominees—Hulu’s Casual, OITNB, and Amazon’s Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle—came from streaming. HBO’s Silicon Valley and Veep were the only traditional network shows to make the cut.
The Best Actor, Musical or Comedy category also had a strong showing of nominees from shows on streaming services with Master of None’s Aziz Ansari, Mozart in the Jungle’s Gael Garcia Bernal, and Transparent’s Jeffrey Tambor all getting nods. That, for people who like numbers, is 60 percent of the nominee pool, and moreover it indicates there could be a time when an entire category contains not a single nominee from a traditional broadcast or cable network.
It also shows that Netflix’s original content expansion has certainly paid off. In addition to Ansari’s nod, Lily Tomlin got a nomination for Best Actress in a TV Series, Comedy for Grace and Frankie and Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation scored a Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture nomination for Idris Elba. Earning nods in film and television, and on both sides of the comedy/drama divide is difficult, and Elba’s nomination in particular provides Netflix with a prestige foothold as it expands into making more original films.
