Here are some of the reasons whether they all understand this or not:
1. There are no longer enough Republicans to ever elect another Republican President.
The last first time elected Republican to win the popular vote was Bush I in 1988. Gore won the popular vote in 2000 and Americans always re-elect the President during a war or wars.
2. Trump sounds like an Angry Republican sounding off in a Bar. So, this resonates with middle to Lower Class Republicans that might not have gone to High School and might not be good at Critical thinking or ferreting truth from Rumors.
3. Trump has alienated both most Hispanics and most Black people as well as all minorities including Women and Gay people in the U.S. so this likely means there is no way Trump could win in 2016.
4. Trump tells more lies than any other politician in history, especially more than any front running Republican Candidate almost ever.
5. These lies are often taken as truths by really angry people and those people sometimes become even more dangerous.
6. One of the reasons the Demonstrators in Oregon who moved into the Wildlife Preserve is that people are scared in government that another Waco or Oklahoma bombing could be the long term result of any action against these demonstrators that moved in during an election year.
7. It's not just Republicans who are upset, Liberal Republicans are equally angry as conservative Republicans which is why Sanders is doing so well with young Democrats.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
